The last leg of this ride takes you along the scenic Chuckanut driver. You depart on Highway 20, heading west towards Burlington. at the town of Whitney, turn left and head north on Bayview Edison Road. Follow that road all the way through the town of Edison until you get to Chuckanut drive and turn left.
Chuckanut is a narrow but beautiful road that winds along the coast all the way to the town of Fairhaven. While I referred to Bellingham as the terminus for this ride, it is actually Fairhaven, a suburb of Bellingham because that is where the train station is located.
Fairhaven is a charming little town and much more attractive than Bellingham. From here you can catch Amtrak to Vancouver BC or back to Seattle. This is also the port for the Alaska Marine Highway, a ferry that can take you all the way up the inside passage to Homer and on to the end of the Aleutian peninsula if you’re feeling adventurous. Be sure to make reservations in advance, however, as it is not a frequent service.
