Kelso to Skamokowa

This ride takes you to the tranquil kayaking hamlet of Skamokowa where I recommend spending the night. The first part of the ride is a distasteful but necessary commute through the industrial town of Longview. My experience along the road validated what I’d heard about Longview being made up of meth heads. It’s the worst planned city I’ve ever seen. The only thing that can be said for riding through Longview is that is makes the reward even greater once you enter the Lower Columbia River Gorge.

I find this part of the Gorge to be just as beautiful as the Multnomah falls area, and the road hugs the river so you are rewarded with great views for most of the ride.

If you are only interested in a day trip, turn south onto Main street at Cathalmet. You can stop for food in town or continue south along 409 until you reach the ferry landing. The ferry runs hourly to the town or Westport in Oregon. From there, you can catch the Columbia County Rider to Ranier and then onto Portland.

If you continue on to Skamokowa, stay on 4 for a few miles past Cathalmet and then turn left into the Julia Butler Hansen refuge. Follow the main road until you get to the bike trail that takes you directly into Skamakowa. If it’s a hot day, you can jump from the bridge into Skamokowa creek.
