This ride can be done on either the Washington side of the river or the Oregon side

Along the Washington side

Head west out of Skamakowa on highway 4 until you reach the left turnoff for highway 401 and Naselle. Follow highway 401 south until you reach the town of Megler. Just past Megler, you will intersect with coastal highway 101 and ride south over the bridge. This is not a pleasant crossing as there is very little shoulder for biking. The only other alternative is a weekday bus that passes through the town of Megler twice a day. Note this is weekdays only!

Along the Oregon side

Head east out of Skamakowa on highway 4 until you reach turn south onto Main street at Cathalmet. You can stop for coffee in town or continue south along 409 until you reach the ferry landing. The ferry runs hourly to the town of Wesport in Oregon

From Westport, follow highway 30 west. There is a little up and down on this relatively short stretch to Astoria

If possible spend a night or two in Astoria, a town that’s a miniature version of San Francisco, including a dock piled with barking sea lions. There are several rides that can be done from here.
